Hot Chocolate “Shot”

There are many bitter cold and somewhat solitary winter nights where I crave something nostalgic and comforting. As a child, I used to drink hot chocolate at the Christmas markets with my parents, while they enjoyed the more entertaining version: mulled wine. These homemade chocolate “shots” are the perfect after-dinner sweet-tooth remedy before hibernating under the covers for a good night’s sleep.

Passports and Pamplemousse Cozy Hot Chocolate Shot

For a sleepy-time chocolate shot for 2 people take:

Begin by making the spice mix:
4 pods of cardamom
½ teaspoon vanilla sugar
¼ teaspoon of coriander
¼ teaspoon of cinnamon
tiny pinch of salt
grind this to a powder with a pestle and mortar. You will have some left over. Save in a glass jar for next time!

Then prepare:
70ml of whole milk
30ml of cream
(or simply 100ml of whole milk)
20g high quality dark chocolate
and take one 1 teaspoon of my chocolate-spice-mix from above (save the rest for later)

Simply heat the milk & cream over medium heat together with the spices.
Once hot, add the dark chocolate (best if chopping into small pieces) and use a milk foamer or a whisk to incorporate.

Serve in espresso glasses or espresso cups & savor

  1. Hi – This sounds amazing, but I had a question. Do you use the whole cardamom pods, or do you take out the seeds and just grind the seeds?

    1. Hi Mona! thanks for stopping by to see us! Yes, you should open the pods and grind up the seeds inside. You can also purchase ground Cardamom which may make it a bit easier. I tend to always go for the pods! Enjoy!

    1. just use enough milk to fill two shot glasses or espresso cups. If you drink more (like an american mug size) then adapt the amount of spices of course. I like doing the “shots” because I don’t usually drink milk and its quite rich before bed. So the shot is just enough for me! 🙂

  2. Does sound Great, I enjoy something like this, the main difference is that I add a little kalula.in place of the cream. Once you have a recipe like this, those chilly nights aren’t all that bad.
